Next came the Denon POA-S10 monoblock amps that I received from Japan. I hooked them up to a very highly regarded Sony receiver (Sony STR-GX10ES) which was rated at 150 wpc into 8 Ohms and they sounded terrible, I very much wanted to go back to my Bose 901s! I was extremely disappointed and thought I had made a big mistake in ordering them. I had a bunch of stuff ordered from Japan but the speakers arrived first. I bought new a pair of 803 matrix S2 speakers about 20 years ago. Of course, that can make getting the right seat height an issue if you are using a sofa, or similar! (Nothing easy in this hobby! )

If you can get a good deal, why not try it?Īlthough the B&Ws are called floor-standers, I always found that I preferred to lift them slightly off the floor. I would expect the performance of this speaker to be similar to the Matrix 801, which was a very capable speaker, and did some things fantastically well. Obviously, in a studio/demo setting we are talking about continuous high playback level and large listening/control rooms, but I never got the impression that the speakers were struggling due to the amount of power on tap, even when using the little 805s!! I use 400 W (8)/800 W (4) monoblocks at home, and used 600 W (8)/1200 W (4) monoblocks for work (studio and demonstration). In my experience, B&Ws thrive on high-powered solid-state amplification. If I have the right Cyrus model specs., it can deliver 80 W into 4 ohms.

According to B&W, the Matrix 3 S2 does not dip below 4.5 ohms, and is recommended for amplifiers in the 50W-200W (at 4 ohms!!) range.
MISSION CYRUS 1 SERIES
I have no experience with the Matrix 3 Series 2, but used to use Matrix 801 S3, before switching to the new 800-series (I use 802 at home). Much will depend on the size of your listening room and preferred playback level.

I used to have a friend with Cyrus amps., but like Pancat said, his were mated to Mission speakers too, and they seemed to go together very well.
